Blumhouse is back with a fourth movie in their very popular Purge franchise. An ingenious idea for this most recent installment, The First Purge is going back to the beginning, serving as a prequel to the current trilogy and (as the title suggests) looks at how the Purge began to be.

The plot, as revealed by today’s trailer, follows an American government that has grown hungry with power and now working with Marisa Tomei’s new character to make that power stay. With several clues spread throughout the preview (including a nice little twist about the paramilitary members being sent in to … encourage people to partake), this looks like it will be as much fun as its predecessors. We’ll be there opening weekend (especially if CNN political personality Van Jones shows up in more than just the scenes in the trailer).

The First Purge opens, appropriately, on July 4, 2018. “United we purge. An American tradition.”
